Commission member pitches citywide holiday display modeled on 'Nutcracker Village'

Commission member Joe Nocera urged the commission to consider a large winter display—modeled on Steubenville’s Nutcracker Village—that would invite businesses and schools to buy and sponsor sculptural pieces for a citywide walk‑through. Nocera said the concept can scale over multiple years: "It brings in thousands of people across the country every year just to see these things," and he argued it can be done with minimal city expense because fabricators and sponsors cover most costs.

He described a typical financial model: an initial fabrication fee paid by a sponsor (he mentioned an example fabrication fee around $500 and a smaller upkeep fee paid annually by owners in the Steubenville model) and volunteers to install pieces. Commissioners asked practical questions about storage, liability and who would fabricate the pieces. Nocera said many sponsors retain ownership and that vandalism has been rare in his example; he also said he has contacts with Nelson’s in Steubenville, a fabricator that produces similar public sculptures.

Members discussed alternatives—local fabrication versus out‑of‑town vendors, risk management, timeline constraints if approved for an upcoming season and possible partnerships to offset costs. Chair Chapman noted potential grant support (an Ohio Arts Council banner appeared on the referenced site) and suggested the commission weigh the idea for a longer runway (2027 rather than immediate deployment) so quality and logistics can be ensured.
