Mayor Jeff Gore presented a proclamation and a key to the city Thursday recognizing the Wayne High School boys track and field team and coaching staff after the program won the 2026 Ohio High School Athletic Association Division 1 state championship.
"I, Jeff Gore, mayor of the City Of Heber Heights, do hereby extend our best wishes for continued success to Keyshawn Garrett, Wayne High School 2026 boys track and field team," Gore read as he described the team's consecutive state championships. He also read a proclamation recognizing coach Mike Fernandez's long tenure and contributions to students.
Coach Mike Fernandez, who has coached at Wayne since the late 1990s, accepted the honor and thanked the athletes and assistant coaches. "I am honored, humbled by this," he told the council, recalling the program's history and the team's recent successes.
Several team members and assistant coaches addressed the council, describing personal bests and relays. Councilmembers suggested the city post 'back‑to‑back championship' signage at city entrances. The recognition included individual citations for athletes, including Keyshawn Garrett, identified in the proclamation as the 2026 OHSAA Division 1 state champion in the 100‑ and 200‑meter races.
