Medina aldermen approve $6 monthly garbage fee increase to cover bulk pickup

Mayor Scottie Betts called the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Medina to order on June 8 and the board approved the meeting agenda.
The city recorder reviewed the status of solid-waste contracts, noting the current Waste Management contract renewal date is June 2028 and that RAKK Solid confirmed their upcoming contract renewal will also extend to June 2028, which would allow the city to put both contracts out for bid at the same time. The recorder further reported that RAKK Solid’s cost will remain unchanged for the remaining two years of that contract term. After reviewing the Solid Waste Fund and projected bulk-pickup costs, the board discussed increasing residential garbage fees to cover bulk fees going forward.
Alderman Andrew Rhodes moved to "approve additional $6 fee to be added to garbage fees to total $28 per month per household." Alderman Angi Mathenia seconded the motion, and the board approved it 4-0. City Recorder Kim Gilley presented the contract timing and cost information used in the board’s decision.
The board did not adopt a formal schedule for future bids at the meeting; they recorded that both contracts will be eligible to be rebid in June 2028. The motion and unanimous vote constituted the formal direction to adjust monthly residential billing to cover ongoing bulk-pickup costs.
