Kalkaska County committee reviews 12 proposed zoning ordinance changes; temporary-structure edits tabled

Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners County Affairs Committee met May 5, 2025, to review proposed changes to the county zoning ordinance. Committee Chair Robert Baldwin called Zoning Administrator Gayenell Gentelia to present a package of edits covering 12 sections of the code; the meeting was called to order at 8:32 AM and adjourned at 10:03 AM.
Gentelia summarized the proposed edits, which include clarifications to the Home Occupations section and Recreational Accessory standards, renumbering of Uses Subject to Special Use Permit, and a revision of storage definitions to distinguish Warehouse, Mini-warehouse and Rental Storage Buildings. She also described proposed deletions and wording changes in Article 21, an addition of Event Center to commercial recreation uses, and a new definition of Event Center in Article 32. Of the 12 items presented, the committee tabled changes to the Temporary Structures section (#8) for further information.
Commissioner Kohn Fisher noted that the County Planning Commission reviewed the draft; committee discussion also raised concerns about how the changes would interact with the Land Division Act and possible parcel splits. Committee members said there was no formal opposition recorded at the special meeting and asked staff to return the updated draft for the Committee Meeting of the Whole. Gentelia is scheduled to provide an updated document with page numbering for the May 14, 2025 review.
