Presenters urge keeping Recycle Center; Material Management Planning discussed

At the April 16 meeting, county staff and outside presenters urged the Board of Commissioners to engage in Material Management Planning (MMP) and to consider preserving the Kalkaska Recycle Center.
Tracy Tomazewski and Kristen Wieland explained that the MMP process across counties aims to reduce landfill waste, expand drop-off options and treat waste as a commodity. They said a county that develops an MMP could access roughly $60,000 for the first three years, with continued funding tied to per-capita measures. The presenters recommended a needs assessment, a consultant or committee to prepare the plan, and attendance at a statewide workshop in Muskegon in May. Administrator David Schaeffer told the board the Recycle Center could be removed from the market without concern from the realtor, and the MMP presenters urged that the county consider keeping the location while exploring partnerships and funding options.
Separately, Micah Haven of Grand Traverse Industries reviewed GTI's 50 years of services for people with disabilities and raised concerns about decreased funding for support services, asking the board to advocate for continued resources.
Commissioners asked for additional information and said they would discuss options with MDOT and other partners when considering broader infrastructure and environmental-service planning.
