Kalkaska commissioners discuss sale of Annex and Recycle Center, caution on millage restrictions

Kalkaska County Administrator David Schaeffer told the DPW Committee on April 7 that there are showings scheduled for the Annex and Recycle Center as the county continues exploring sale options. Chair David Comai cautioned that the county must verify whether the Recycle Center buildings or property were funded by Recycle millage proceeds and therefore restricted from being repurposed.
Comai said the prior plan had been to use sale proceeds from those properties to offset Kaliseum debt and warned of continuing expenses for county-owned buildings. The committee discussed truck and skid-steer debt tied to DPW assets and the financial balance between selling property and retaining county-owned storage and equipment.
No binding decision to sell was taken at the meeting. The committee adopted a consensus motion authorizing the County Administrator to communicate with the realtor about sale options for the Recycle Center/Annex; the motion was made by Commissioner Jeff Sieting, supported by Commissioner Scott Matley, and recorded with no opposition.
