Kalkaska County commissioners approve letter allowing exploration of proposed data center

The Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners on March 24 approved a letter of support that will allow further exploration of a proposed data center in the county.
Motion by Commissioner Jeff Sieting approved the "proposed Letter of Support for Data Center Development in Kalkaska County," supported by Commissioner Robert Baldwin; the roll call vote recorded Sieting, Baldwin, David Persons and Chair Kohn Fisher as voting yes, with Commissioners David Comai, Scott Matley and Truman Bicum absent. The minutes record the motion as carried, 4 yeas, 0 nays, 3 absent.
Board members and staff emphasized that the letter is exploratory and does not bind the county to approve or host the project. Commissioners noted materials supplied by Economic Development Corporation (EDC) representatives and the possibility of involvement from Consumers Energy and companies described in the materials as Michigan- or U.S.-based.
The minutes state commissioners discussed potential community benefits, including employment and new revenue, and focused discussion on candidate parcels that would have minimal impact on residential properties.
