Jillian Orme, an economic development intern in Auburn's community development department, described a summer of research, neighborhood visits and code work aimed at encouraging affordable housing and business retention. "My big project...is the multifamily tax exemption," Orme said, adding she has studied the state's guidance and other cities' MFTE zones to inform local code changes.
Orme also described direct business outreach and communications work: she has written a draft for the city magazine, helped produce small-business spotlights and conducted outreach visits. "Even just today, we went to Sonora Tacos for lunch. The owner was there, and we got to talk to him about what's going on at his business," she said, citing the city's hands-on approach to business retention.
