City Fire Chief Tom Herndon told the committee the city fire station has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and reviewed the department's 2025 incident totals: 1,270 incidents recorded, 27 fire calls and an EMS share of about 80% of calls. Herndon said newer firefighters have reached the six-month mark and many are mid-way through paramedic school.
Herndon and Onekama Fire Chief Rob Johnson described progress on forming a regional Fire District. Filer, Onekama and Manistee townships have signed letters of intent and each contributed $5,000 toward attorney fees and start-up work; Stronach Township will consider the proposal at its upcoming board meeting. Committee materials indicate bi-weekly meetings are planned to draft Articles of Incorporation and finalize governance details.
