Auburn mayor showcases Next Step Auburn internship program, cites hands-on city placements

Mayor Nancy Backus used the That So Auburn podcast to spotlight Next Step Auburn, the city's formal internship program that places interns in departments from economic development to human services. "One of the things I love most about local government is just how many different ways there are to serve a community," Backus said, introducing two interns and their manager to discuss summer work and learning outcomes.
Melissa Medich, the city's human resources manager, told the mayor the program began in 2023 under Backus's guidance and that managers appreciate interns as both helpers and mentees. "Next Step Auburn is our official formal internship program here at the city," Medich said, noting placements in IT, parks, airport operations, community development and human services. Medich said the city has begun piloting a high-school track, called First Step Auburn, and hopes to expand department-specific pathways next year.
