Grand Prairie to serve as regional support node for FIFA events; city outlines public‑safety posture

Chase Wheeler, assistant director for Grand Prairie Fire and Emergency Management, told the council the city will serve as a regional support entity during the upcoming international soccer tournament and will activate a local Mercy Operations Center for each of nine matches scheduled in nearby Arlington. "We're here to provide this evening just some information about FIFA, what we're doing locally, what we're doing regionally and really where we fit into that regional structure as a support entity for the games overall," Wheeler said. He said the region's Joint Operations Center in Dallas — staffed by federal, state and FIFA representatives — will make operational decisions and Grand Prairie will support requests for personnel, equipment and other resources.
Wheeler described a planning structure that mirrors the Super Bowl posture: expert planning teams cover law enforcement, fire, aviation and other disciplines and feed the Joint Operations Center. On cybersecurity and threat coordination he said the city is "in lockstep with the feds" and that the city has been proactively preparing for a range of threats while not disclosing sensitive operational details. Police and fire staff will also provide liaisons to regional planning teams and run local training and response staffing on match days.
