Representative Kim described an untimely amendment to House Bill 22-27 that would permit a parent or legal guardian to opt a student out of annual firearms-safety instruction. "This bill allows a parent or legal guardian to opt their student out of receiving the instruction," she said, adding that LEAs and public charter schools must notify parents at least 30 days before instruction and provide alternative instruction while firearm safety training occurs. The amendment also states that the alternative instruction would be determined by the principal in consultation with the teacher.
Committee members moved to adopt the untimely amendment, the chair put the question, and the clerk recorded 4 ayes and 0 no's. The chair then said the bill would move on to full education. Representative Johnson expressed appreciation for offering parents a choice given traumatic experiences some students or families have had, and Representative Kim thanked the committee for consideration.
