Department says educator preparation programs largely responsive but math coursework varies

Christie Brown reported that 44 of 45 educator preparation programs responded to the department’s survey and that requirements for math content courses vary by endorsement area. "As candidates are seeking higher grade level endorsements, they're more likely to complete more required coursework in their preparation," Brown said, noting early childhood endorsements typically require two to three math content courses while middle and secondary endorsements generally require more.
Brown said the department has strengthened partnerships with the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) to monitor implementation of coursework and to encourage alignment with district instructional materials. She told the committee the department can provide the committee with a district‑by‑district list showing proficiency rates and which curricula each district adopted.
