Lawmakers and advocates debate guaranteeing advanced math access for proficient 7th graders

A SCORE presenter said the legislature worked on a 2022 policy commonly described as "automatic enrollment" that would require local board policy "for who gets access to the next advanced course [to] be based on objective data." The presenter added that pockets of districts still use discretion that can limit access.
Members described logistical barriers in small and rural districts—limited course sections and a shortage of credentialed teachers—and suggested possible solutions, including credentialing additional teachers and using virtual instruction or partnerships with community colleges. Chairman White warned that virtual instruction requires strict guidance for it to be effective in rural settings.
