Chair touts Tennessee gains on 2024 NAEP assessments

The Chair opened the subcommittee by presenting highlights from the ’24 NAEP and said Tennessee has made measurable progress in K–12 performance statewide. "We're showing tremendous progress in education in our K-twelve systems," the Chair said, citing shifts in historical rankings.
According to the Chair's summary, Tennessee moved from 30th in 2009 to 24th in fourth-grade reading; fourth-grade math improved from 45th to 13th; eighth-grade reading moved from 34th to 21st; and eighth-grade math rose from 42nd to 20th. The Chair attributed the improvements to teachers, administrators, students and parents and said the committee's work at the state level is producing results. The Department of Education is scheduled to present a related longitudinal mathematics study to the subcommittee on Jan. 20, the Chair added.
