Council issues intent to award Rt. 211 sidewalk, contingent on extra VDOT funding

Council voted 5-1 on Feb. 18 to issue an intent to award the Rt. 211 sidewalk project to Ashburn Contracting Corporation and to authorize the town manager to execute contracts only if the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provides increased funding. Planning/engineering staff reported the lowest base bid was $249,784 and soft costs $208,734, for a total project estimate of $458,518; VDOT previously approved $175,000 in reimbursement and town staff asked VDOT to increase its share by $54,259 to preserve the match scenario.
Mrs. Summer Medina explained that if VDOT funds the full additional match the town's share would be $229,259; if VDOT does not provide the increase the town's share could be $283,518. The motion to issue the intent to award passed on a 5-1 roll-call vote with Councilmember Jon Henry cast as the lone nay. Tyler Austin of Racey Engineering was present to answer technical questions.
