Commissioners continue review of ORV-on-roads ordinance; time restrictions raise concerns

The Roscommon County board continued work on an off-road vehicle ordinance that its sponsor emphasized applies only to ORV use on public roads, not trails or golf carts.
"This is about an ORV ordinance for ORVs on the roads. This has nothing to do with ORVs on the trails, and it has nothing to do with golf carts," the vice chair said during the unfinished-business discussion. Commissioners and township representatives discussed aligning any time restrictions with local noise ordinances and township enforcement policies.
One commissioner said she was "uncomfortable with the restriction from 11 to 5," calling that window an impediment to personal freedoms. Others asked that the draft be reviewed with township law enforcement, the DNR and the prosecuting attorney before coming back to the board.
The board did not vote; members agreed to continue the discussion in additional meetings and to compile proposed inclusions and exclusions for a future, formal proposal.
