Registrar says Virginia Department of Elections will handle redistricting costs tied to April election

Teresa “Teri” Smithson, Director of Elections and General Registrar, informed the Electoral Board that state-level staff from the Virginia Department of Elections are meeting with local officials to prepare for redistricting that could result from the April 21, 2026 election. Smithson said Hanover County will be affected and that the state will assume costs related to VERIS administration and voter notification.
Board members recorded the update as part of the registrar’s report; no formal board action was taken on redistricting at the March 13 meeting. The board did not provide additional direction during this meeting, leaving operational planning to registrar and state staff.
