New Market council approves Farmer's Market move to South Congress lot and Saturday schedule

The New Market Town Council approved a request Jan. 21, 2026, to relocate the New Market Farmer's Market to a town-owned vacant lot on South Congress Street and to change its primary operating day from Friday to Saturday.
Summer Medina, Planning Department, summarized the request and noted bid deadlines for nearby projects. She said the market "is hoping to grow the market, and this location will give them more room to do that and give more visibility." Market representative Barbara Connor said she will close the market one Saturday each month to avoid overlap with the Mt. Jackson Farmer's Market and is working on a website and Facebook updates.
The council discussed a contingency plan in case the town begins construction on the vacant lot; Mr. Garrison suggested the downtown public parking lot be used as a backup. Peg Harkness moved to approve the letter of request with that backup amendment; Jon Henry seconded. The motion passed on a 4-0 roll-call vote.
The board recorded operating dates in the request as March 14 through Oct. 10, 2026, with hours 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The council did not attach additional conditions beyond the backup-location amendment.
