Council approves five appointments to new Historic Preservation Commission

Community development director Patricia Love presented the mayor’s recommendation to staff a new Historic Preservation Commission and asked the council to confirm five nominees. "Once these people are seated, we will actually have met the requirements to be a certified local government in the state of Washington," Love said, explaining that certification would allow the city to seek state and federal preservation grants.
Council member Bergland moved to appoint Tim Pierce, Elizabeth Callahan, Joan Andrews, Melissa Overbeck and Mary McCormick; the motion was seconded by Council member Hicks and passed unanimously. The council discussed the nominees’ qualifications in brief remarks: Love noted the commission grew from the downtown initiative, and councilmembers praised the applicants’ local experience, including Andrews’ role with the historical society and Overbeck’s experience as a local realtor and property owner.
The council indicated staff will contact appointees about timing; Love said the commission’s first meeting is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 23 and will be held in the evening. No public testimony opposed the appointments.
