Wilkesboro mayor asks county to discuss payment-in-lieu-of-taxes for County-owned properties

Wilkesboro Mayor Dale Isom told the Wilkes County Board on June 2 that the Town hosts a significant concentration of county properties and asked the County to consider discussions about a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) to recognize municipal services the town provides. He said the County owns roughly $157 million in property within the town limits and that, at Wilkesboro's municipal rate of $0.46 per $100 valuation, those properties would produce about $722,385 annually if taxable.
Isom framed the request as a fairness issue for the town's roughly 3,687 residents, who provide municipal services (police, fire, streets, planning) that support County facilities serving all 65,969 county residents. He asked only that the Board "consider entering into discussions with the Town regarding a payment in lieu of taxes agreement" and to work toward a contribution that recognizes municipal costs rather than demanding the full calculated amount.
