Committee approves Popli Design feasibility study after officials cite urgent space needs for DA and Public Defender

The Wayne County Public Works Committee voted to authorize a contract with Popli Design Group for feasibility, investigative and schematic design services after members discussed county space needs and the absence of ‘‘swing space’’ for staff relocation.
Director of Compliance Ed Hunt said the county’s space‑needs survey showed both the District Attorney’s Office and the Public Defender’s Office reported urgent needs to meet mandates, and Hunt cited a rise in mental health referrals as a driver of increased service demand. The motion passed 3-0-1, with Supervisor Barry VanNostrand recorded as abstaining. Committee discussion included a concept to relocate the District Attorney to the existing Department of Social Services building to keep the office near the courthouse while constructing new space for Social Services that would include swing space.
