Lance Gumbs, vice chairman of the Shinnecock Nation, told county staff the nation requires written confirmation that the Reverend Paul Cuffee gravesite will not be disturbed by the project.
"We have 400 years of lies," Gumbs said, explaining why verbal assurances are not sufficient and asking for formal, written documentation of protection and tribal inclusion in correspondence and review. County representatives replied that they do not plan to work near the site, that the gravesite is more than 300 feet from the project limits, and that the federal Section 106 historic preservation review will be coordinated with the State Historic Preservation Office as part of the design process.
Tribal leaders said they will expect written assurances and direct consultation as the project moves through design and permitting.
