Residents warn proposed detour will overwhelm Fanning Avenue and adjacent streets

"It's bumper to bumper," said multiple commenters as they described current year‑round congestion on Fanning Avenue and feeder streets. Residents urged the county to test and observe existing conditions and to consult school and emergency services before finalizing the detour plan.
Speakers suggested a range of mitigation options: confining commercial vehicles to Sunrise Highway, advanced signage and app notifications, temporary traffic enforcement or police assistance during the detour, and physical measures such as one‑way routing during peak hours. Several residents asked the county to consider financial support for businesses and to include pavement repairs to side streets that would carry detour traffic.
County staff said they have conducted traffic modeling that projects up to 10 additional minutes of travel time in peak conditions but acknowledged attendees' objections and said they will continue coordination with the town, emergency services and transit providers during the design process.
