Batavia residents press commissioners over zoning, blame developers and county roles

Three residents from Batavia raised zoning and development concerns during public participation at the Clermont County Board of Commissioners’ Oct. 15 meeting.
Kyla Hucker asked about whether the Ohio Department of Transportation could be fined for the bridge on State Route 32 in Eastgate. William Albright said he attends many village and township meetings and has been told that different bodies are to blame for Batavia housing issues; he said the Batavia Zoning Commission pointed to the Clermont County Commissioners as responsible for the recent surge in development. Dennis Brunet told the Board he is "concerned about Batavia's zoning and the greed of developers" and requested personnel information regarding a former Building Department employee.
Drew DeMarsh, Senior Planner for the Clermont County Department of Community and Economic Development, responded that "Clermont County has Township Zoning, no County zoning," explaining that townships set their own zoning rules, with Washington Township as an exception that lacks zoning. Kris McClintick, Director of Community and Economic Development, also told the Board that Bruce Crase is no longer with the County, a staff clarification offered after a public request about a former employee. The Board took no formal action on zoning authority at the meeting.
