Township retains longtime solicitor; residents call for bidding

The Salem Township Board of Supervisors voted Jan. 6 to appoint Gary Falatovich as township solicitor at a retainer of $200 per month and $130 per hour for work outside regular meetings. The motion passed with supervisors Bob Zundel, Ken Trumbetta and Kerry Jobe voting in favor.
Resident Kent Boggs and Debbie Perino asked when the solicitor contract was last put out to bid. Supervisor Bob Zundel said Solicitor Falatovich "has been here since 2002" and added, "We are confident that he will keep us out of lawsuits." Supervisor Kerry Jobe defended the process, saying, "Professional services are not bid out because you are allowed to interview and pick. The going rate is over $200/hr." Perino and Boggs said they believe the solicitor position should be bid publicly; the board nevertheless approved the appointment.
