Board discusses "portrait of a graduate" and plans student, community input

Superintendent Ingrid Colvard presented examples of other districts' "portrait of a graduate" frameworks and said the idea is to identify the skills and abilities students should possess by graduation and to use that model to shape strategic planning.
"The idea is to look at what skills or abilities a district wants their students to be able to gain by the time they graduate," Colvard said. Board members discussed ensuring the portrait applies districtwide and connects to building-level school improvement plans; Jeff Wickersham emphasized involving students in development so they can see how current courses connect to postgraduation goals. Devin Kuh, a guest, voiced support for structuring school improvement plans and district strategic planning around the portrait.
The board asked staff to solicit input from students and the community and to bring responses back for the board to consider when setting norms and goals.
