Trustees back placing Phoebe Hearst statue at Main Street entrance of Hearst Free Library

Trustee Kurt Wyant told the board he believes the best location for the Phoebe Hearst statue is at the Hearst Free Library, at the Main Street entrance, rather than at Kennedy Commons. Wyant said the temporary book drop could be removed now that the 4th Street stairs are repaired and suggested replacing the present memorial to Mrs. Spellman with a bronze plaque mounted on the handicap railing. Trustees Marsha Miller and Bobbie Frank expressed agreement with locating the statue on Main Street.
The trustees noted that the Historic Resources Board had shown photographs that depicted two different poses for the statue — one holding a book and one with arms at her sides — and that it was not clear from the HRB materials which pose would be used in the final version. The board agreed Director Sam Walters should write to the Historic Resources Board to explain the trustees' preference for the Main Street site and to invite HRB members to attend the library board's April meeting to discuss the matter. The trustees also acknowledged that the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County commissioners will determine the statue's final location.
