Liberty Theatre asks Astoria Development Commission for $200,000 to finish $1.74M exterior restoration

Jennifer Crockett, executive director of the Liberty Theatre, asked the Astoria Development Commission during public comment to consider $200,000 in urban renewal funding to finish a $1.74 million exterior rehabilitation of the historic theatre and meet its 100th-anniversary timeline.
"Our exterior project is a $1,740,000 project that addresses seismic cracks, leaks throughout the complex, rotten windows, broken sidewalks, and the roofs on the building," Crockett said, and said the organization had raised community contributions totaling $1,550,000 from 94 donations. She told commissioners the Liberty Theatre welcomes about 25,000 people through its doors annually and that nearly half of attendees come from the Portland and Seattle metros, contributing roughly $1.5 million in economic impact.
Commissioner Adams asked that the commission put the Liberty Theatre’s formal request on the Feb. 3 agenda for the development commission to deliberate and potentially approve $200,000 from urban renewal funds; City Manager Spence was asked to add the item and notify the public that the development commission would convene following the Feb. 3 City Council meeting.
