City says 5th and Commercial slide is shallow; geotech finds no immediate danger to structures

Director Harrington told the council the slide on Commercial Street is a shallow landslide in weathered siltstone similar to prior local slides, and that a geotechnical engineer found no immediate danger to adjacent structures.
“None of the adjacent structures appear to be in any kind of immediate danger,” Harrington said, adding that staff removed hanging trees and will monitor the slope through the wet season before attempting larger remedial work. He said temporary measures such as econo blocks behind the sidewalk and partial reopening may occur once the slope stabilizes in drier months.
Councilors asked about timing and the composition of hydro-seed mixes for revegetation; Harrington described hydro-seeding as a mixture of suitable grasses and an adhesive sprayed on the soil to encourage germination after disturbance. Staff said they will issue a press release to update residents.
