Astoria Fire deployed to California; city expects reimbursement for estimated $83,000 cost

Fire Chief Dan Crutchfield briefed the council on Astoria Fire’s deployment to assist with California wildfires. He said Oregon sent 21 strike teams (370 firefighters) to California and Clatsop County contributed one strike team; Astoria provided one engine and personnel.
Crutchfield estimated the city’s deployment costs at about $83,000, explaining that roughly $33,000 of that amount covers the use of the fire engine and the balance covers personnel, fuel, motels and meals while deployed. He said California reimburses responding departments directly and that the city must prepare reports to receive payment.
Councilors asked how reimbursement funds are used; Crutchfield said payments go into a department account reserved for future equipment and capital needs. He noted the arrangement helps the department build a reserve for large purchases such as new fire engines.
