Council authorizes application for regional AFG to replace thermal-imaging cameras

The Astoria City Council authorized Fire Department staff to participate in a regional Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) application that would pay for replacement thermal-imaging cameras.
City Manager Spence explained the regional application led by Cannon Beach and estimated the equipment cost at about $40,000 with a 10% ($4,000) local match if the grant is awarded. Fire Chief Dan Crutchfield told the council, “the assistance to firefighter grant opportunity opens once a year,” and explained departments can apply individually or regionally.
Councilors asked about frequency of the grant and replacement cycles; Chief Crutchfield said the department currently owns a mix of newer and older cameras and replacing four old units via the grant would reduce local expenditures. The council moved, seconded and carried the authorization for staff to apply and to accept the award if granted.
