Council authorizes submission of draft Hazard Mitigation Plan to Whatcom County

Carson Cortez, the City Planner, told the council that Whatcom County and the small cities have updated the Hazard Mitigation Plan, which is reviewed on a five-year cycle and includes a jurisdictional profile for each city. As Cortez put it, "The plan is updated on a five-year cycle, and each city has a jurisdictional profile." The council heard that the primary changes are to the list of hazards and the method used to determine each hazard, plus edits to planning, population, and critical facilities sections.
Councilmember Josh Clawson moved to authorize Cortez to submit the draft plan to Whatcom County; Councilmember Richard Postma seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Final adoption of the plan is expected by the end of the year, and the submission is the next formal step to satisfy the county’s schedule.
