The Astoria Development Commission approved a short-term lease of Astor East property to the Columbia River Maritime Museum (CRMM) to serve as a construction yard while CRMM undertakes a major expansion.
City manager Mister Spence said the museum is planning a "$30,000,000" expansion that would add a two-story, 26,000-square-foot exhibition and education facility, and that the commission-owned parcel could provide a yard for staging. Spence described a proposed lease period from Feb. 1, 2025, through Oct. 31, 2026, and presented compensation options including a monthly rate of $1,250 (for a total of $26,250) or an equivalent in-kind contribution toward future parking infrastructure.
Commissioner Davis asked how staff arrived at the monthly figure; Spence said staff consulted local real-estate expertise and applied a per-square-foot approach for bare land without utilities. Commissioner Adams requested exhibit maps showing the parcel and noted parking and staging impacts; staff indicated a 15,000-square-foot portion would be occupied for construction activities.
A motion to approve the lease and authorize the city manager to sign was made and seconded; the commission voted in favor and the motion carried.
