TDOT says crews logged more than 149,000 labor hours responding to historic winter storm

TDOT Commissioner Will Reed told the Finance, Ways, and Means Budget Committee that the department mobilized a large, multi-regional response to a recent historic winter storm, reporting more than 149,000 labor hours, thousands of trees cleared, 106,000 tons of salt used, about 812,000 miles driven by TDOT crews and roughly 1,800,000 gallons of salt brine applied to the state's road system.
"we had over to this point over 149,000 labor hours spent by TDOT employees," Reed said while summarizing the response and praising TDOT staff who came from multiple regions to assist affected areas. Reed and members emphasized ongoing readiness: TDOT said it is restocking salt and brine stockpiles and has budgeted for winter response (about $31,000,000 this year), and that it would prioritize safety and may defer nonessential maintenance if supply pressures reoccur.
Committee members asked whether stockpiles were depleted; Reed answered TDOT is restocking, reported the current winter-weather budget near $29.9 million spent to date, and said the agency will sustain response capacity while managing tradeoffs with other maintenance.
