Brookings County enacts seasonal weight limits, cites state statute

The Brookings County Board of County Commissioners on March 17 adopted Resolution #26-10, establishing seasonal weight-limit enforcement on county highways. The resolution sets a seven (7) ton per axle limit on all asphalt surface roads and a five (5) ton per axle limit for County Road 16A. The board voted 5–0 to approve the measure.
The resolution instructs the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office to enforce load limits and references SDCL §32-22-55 for penalties. Chairperson Shawn Hostler signed the resolution and Finance Officer Lori Schultz attested the document. Commissioners and staff said the change responds to seasonal climatic damage to roads and follows recommendation from the county highway superintendent.
The measure amends an earlier resolution (No. 26‑05) and is effective when weight-limit signs are in place. The board did not record any dissenting votes during the roll call.
