Yates County DA seeks broader salary range for ADA; notes upcoming trial, registry, and restitution in fraud case

District Attorney Todd Casella presented his office’s monthly statistics and several policy and staffing updates to the Public Safety Committee on May 5. Casella asked permission to advertise the assistant district attorney position at up to the top of the second quartile of the county's non-union compensation study and to offer within that range to attract candidates after previous offers were declined over distance and salary.
"The ADA position has been advertised for since November of 2025" Casella said, describing several interviews and offers that were not accepted. He also told the Committee that a rape-in-the-first-degree trial is scheduled to start May 18 and that his office is exploring an animal cruelty registry that would be monitored by the Sheriff, adding that materials are with the Sheriff’s office and could be brought forward to the Legislature after the Sheriff’s review. Casella also noted that defendant Todd Alexander pled guilty to grand larceny and agreed to pay over $320,000 in restitution to more than 140 victims by sentencing on Aug. 5.
