During questions from Councilmember Larry Coxsey, Kern explained that the city ran a monthly deficit for May because the month included three payroll periods instead of two, which "upped the whole payroll expense for the city by $30,000 to $35,000," producing an approximate monthly shortfall of $90,711.57. Kern also noted a recent increase in street repairs contributed to higher expenses.
