The Town Commission of the Town of Oakland voted to use a tentative millage rate of 6.7% as the basis for preparing the town’s tentative budget and set a tentative budget hearing for Sept. 9 and a final hearing for Sept. 22.
At the meeting staff explained the general fund budget was balanced using the current millage. As staff put it during the discussion, “The general fund budget was balanced using the current millage, which is 6.7.” Commissioners asked whether the town could instead cover a shortfall by drawing roughly $300,000 from reserves; staff said 6.7 is the starting base for the TRIM process and that the commission could change the millage later but should be mindful of tight deadlines with the property appraiser and Department of Revenue if changes were made close to statutory cutoffs.
A commissioner formally moved to approve the tentative millage of 6.7%; the motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote with those present expressing aye. The commission separately approved the tentative and final budget hearing dates (Sept. 9 and Sept. 22) so staff could proceed with required public-notice and TRIM steps.
