Elko County approves agreement to host FirstNet-capable portable towers

County staff presented an agreement offered by Public Safety Insights to provide towable, FirstNet-connected portable towers that can be mobilized to incident sites. District Chief Matt Peterson said the devices "hook right up to the hitch of a truck" and that "if we'd had this in place last week, we'd have taken it up to Midas, increase some of the communications for the town and the fire."
Peterson told the board the company would cover mobilization costs and that the arrangement leverages the company's contract with AT&T FirstNet so there is no ongoing cost to the district. After brief questions from commissioners about why the company would provide the service, the chair moved to accept the agreement, a commissioner seconded and the board approved the measure.
