Aspen preservation commission finalizes letter to council, authorizes vice chair to sign

The Aspen Historic Preservation Commission reviewed and revised a draft letter to the city council asking for a work session about the Armory / public‑projects review and approved authority for the vice chair to sign the letter on the commission's behalf.

Commissioner Roger Moyer moved that the chair sign the revised letter; because the chair (Cara) was out of the country, the commission voted to authorize the vice chair to sign on behalf of the HPC. Staff confirmed the letter will be sent individually to each city council member with the city manager cc'd. "We will work with Ben to make sure that it gets to council on your behalf," staff said when describing next steps. The roll call recorded unanimous yes votes from the commissioners present.

Members spent substantial time line‑editing the letter: a commissioner suggested removing "however" and tightening phrasing, another recommended the sentence start "we believe" instead of "it is illogical," and others debated capitalization of terms such as "Public Projects." The commission asked staff to coordinate with council staff to arrange a work session prior to any land‑use application submittal, and members asked staff to try to provide more lead time for a large application packet so the commission can review materials thoroughly before a recommendation.
