Brookings County joins state Internet Crimes Against Children task force

The Brookings County Commission voted to approve agreement 26‑22, joining the South Dakota Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force under a joint powers amendment presented at the March 17 meeting. The sheriff described a local increase in internet‑targeted crimes against children and said the county will partner with city law enforcement and the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to investigate referrals and obtain training and equipment: "We're starting to see more and more, types of crimes on the Internet towards children," the sheriff said.
Sergeant Tom Foster and Detective Chester explained training and investigative support that the task force provides and said the state would supply equipment; Foster noted an increase in reports since 2020 and that better tools will help detectives prepare cases for the state's attorney. Commissioners approved the agreement on a roll call vote. The approval authorizes county investigators to participate in joint training and case work with DCI and local police while staff said no immediate county cost is expected.
