Sheriff says $18,000 in donations will support K-9 purchases and training

Sheriff Mike Osmond told the committee the sheriff's office received $12,000 to purchase the last K-9 and $6,000 to cover the new K-9's training. He also reported two nonmonetary donations of fire-suppression units from the Buffalo/Trempealeau County Tavern League, with two additional units expected.
"We received a $12,000 donation to purchase out last K-9 dog and a $6,000 donation to cover the new K-9 dog training," Osmond said. He added that Deputy Buck's K-9, Willow, will retire at the end of the year and that the department currently has three K-9s but will be down to two after the retirement. John Hadley had earlier asked about per-unit K-9 costs; Osmond said the county pays a half hour a day for handlers, plus food and veterinary bills, and that it's "hard to put a figure on it." The committee accepted the donations as part of routine business.
Why it matters: the donations reduce the county's direct procurement cost for the K-9 program and support ongoing training. The sheriff also noted related grant activity, including a grant to procure a money counter that records serial numbers and sends alerts; training for that equipment would be provided on-site.
The committee recorded the donations and thanked staff; no additional funding action was taken at this meeting.
