Behavioral health unit opens at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital; 20 patients admitted in first 40 days

Steve Simpson of Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital said the hospital’s inpatient behavioral health unit admitted its first patient on Sept. 5. “And in the 40 days since then, we have admitted a total of 20 patients,” Simpson said, adding the admissions so far included 12 males and eight females with an average age of about 35.
Simpson described the inpatient unit as an acute care setting intended for relatively short stays and said length of stay depends on diagnosis: “They could be there up to 14 plus days, but typically that's not what we're going to see.” He also said the hospital has completed the build‑out of an intensive outpatient therapy clinic; once operational, Simpson called outpatient services “the game changer in the community.”
The report prompted one question from the board about whether the unit is for long‑term care; Simpson reiterated the unit’s acute focus and that treatment duration varies by patient needs. The board took no formal action; the hospital said it will share further quality metrics at the board’s next meeting when its Q3 scorecard is complete.
The board thanked hospital staff for expanding local behavioral health capacity and moved on to other agenda items.
