West Point Firewise opened a full-day wildfire-safety workshop to introduce its newly certified West Point West Firewise community and to recruit participants for follow-up assessment and mitigation work. The organizer said the voluntary program covers about 275 parcels (roughly 550 people) and emphasized practical steps residents can take now to reduce property risk. "The purpose of this event is in large part to convince you that you can protect your home from wildfire," the presenter told attendees during opening remarks.
The group outlined a schedule for a community data-capture event in October when residents will report hours, dollars spent and vegetation removed so the community can remain in good standing with Firewise Central. Organizers also explained the insurance implications: the California Fair Plan maintains a baseline discount and private insurers may offer additional add-on discounts; the presenter told attendees that some households may receive up to about 15.5% in aggregate discounts depending on measures completed. Staff and Fire Safe Council volunteers left assessment and application forms on a back table and invited residents to sign up for credentialed, free defensible-space assessments.
