Committee hires bond counsel as landfill expansion bids near $20 million

County Manager Jack K. Wheeler told the committee that current construction bids are coming in at "approximately $20 million," and said the county would likely bond the vast majority of that amount to preserve cash balances.
Committee members voiced concern about favorable rates given to large haulers and the long-term availability of landfill capacity. Mr. Van Etten said the county needs to stop giving "sweet deals to large haulers at a preferred rate," and Mr. Thew and others emphasized being cautious about depleting county funds when land is scarce. The county will proceed to retain bond counsel and continue project planning.
