Prosecutor seeks pay increases; public defender lines combined in county budget hearing

Prosecutor Chris Lane asked the council to include a 3% cost-of-living adjustment and additional pay for deputy prosecutors. The submitted budget did not include an extra $40,000 Lane had requested; Lane said he was willing to contribute $10,000 toward that amount. Lane also presented several prosecutor-related funds including Child Support and diversion and forfeiture accounts.
Public defender lines for misdemeanor and felony defenders were combined by staff; Auditor Diana Topping said the state regards the supplemental public defender fund as supplemental only and advised the council on appropriate labeling and treatment of that fund. The council did not finalize additional county contributions during the hearing.
