Council approves Building Department pay reclassifications to boost recruitment

Commissioner Ron Turpin summarized the Building Department 2.0 initiative, saying the county aims to process permits same day and complete inspections within three days. He told Council the department currently has six inspector vacancies and that revised salary grades would make the county more competitive in recruiting licensed tradespeople. "One of the things, we want to do...we have inspections done in no more than three days and building permits the same day," Turpin said.
On motions by Councilman Paul Lagemann (seconded by Kyle Kerley), Council reclassified senior inspectors from D7/1 ($59,949) to D10/1 ($75,519), inspectors from D6/1 ($55,509) to D8/1 ($64,745), and permit specialists from B3/1 ($43,556) to B5/1 ($48,939). Each motion passed on separate roll calls, each recorded 5‑2 (opposed: Don Wyss and Tom A. Harris). Council members discussed overtime, outreach to union halls and cultural/human‑resources supports to pair with pay changes to improve recruitment and retention.
