CAB supports Amendment 1 to Biennial Big Game Release Plan, including bighorn translocations

The Elko CAB voted to support Amendment 1 to the state Biennial Big Game Release Plan, which outlines multiple proposed translocation and augmentation projects for bighorn sheep and pronghorn in the coming fiscal year. Department staff said one new element is the opportunity to move California bighorn from Oregon’s Deschutes River herd into Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, and described a planned capture schedule for other release sites.
Scott Roberts told the CAB the field plan will begin with captures south of Winnemucca and move animals to specified release sites; he said the department plans to presample candidate sites for pathogens and pivot if pathogen profiles require a different release location. "Plan is to move 60 from Area 4 up to that 012 release site," Roberts said, describing the immediate capture schedule. The CAB approved the amendment by voice vote and encouraged volunteer participation for capture operations the department announced.
The CAB’s endorsement is advisory; final translocations and site selections will proceed through the commission’s adoption process and depend on prescreening results and interagency coordination.
