Officials say support for statewide health information exchange likely required for grant eligibility

During questioning, a legislator asked whether grantees would be required to connect to a statewide health information exchange (HIE) as part of eligibility for rural health funds. Richard Grimes (S2) said the plan as written will require support for the HIE and that multiple HIEs will be eligible to participate in procurement.
"As I understand the plan that was written, there will be a requirement to support the HIE," Grimes said, adding that Department of Health staff are still developing technical specifications. He said the procurement for an HIE will be open to eligible HIEs and that Department of Health specs will clarify what connection or support means for different provider types. Lawmakers asked whether one statewide HIE would be mandated and whether out-of-state vendors could bid; Grimes said all eligible HIEs will be invited to participate in the procurement.
